1) How did you discover yoga?
My Dad brought me to my first yoga class when I was 16 and still playing rugby – around 2005 or 2006 – it was at BYC. It was something we’d sometimes do together and that’s still the memory that comes up every time I walk through the studio doors.
2) How long have you been teaching at BYC?
I first taught at BYC in 2019, covering Fed’s Body Conditioning classes. Since then, I’ve occasionally covered Francesca’s Inferno Hot Pilates/Hot HIIT sessions.
3) How long have you been practising at BYC?
Since I was a teenager. BYC has been part of my fitness landscape ever since – even if it’s been a bit on-and-off depending on life.
4) Best piece of advice you’ve ever been given (in yoga or life)?
Don’t wait until you’re ready – because most people never are. There’s no such thing as the perfect moment, perfect plan or perfect version of yourself. There’s just now. And generally speaking, now is as good a time as any to get started.
I still fall into the trap of overthinking or waiting for the stars to align but I try to come back to that mindset.
5) One word to describe your teaching style:
Uplifting.
I aim to make people feel good about showing up. You’ll get a proper sweat, a bit of laughter and leave knowing you’ve done something worthwhile even on the days it felt hard to turn up.
6) One piece of advice for a new yogi starting out:
Be kind to yourself. Don’t waste your energy judging how you look or how well you’re doing. You made it into the room; that’s enough.
Over the years, I’ve learnt to stop shaking my head at myself when I fall out of a posture or can’t go as deep as I’d like. Yoga isn’t about perfection, it’s about showing up, listening to your body and accepting what you’re capable of on that day. Some days you’ll feel strong, other days you won’t — and both are completely fine.
A) Favourite Album(s):
Badly Drawn Boy – The Hour of Bewilderbeast
It flows from track to track like one long thought. It’s evocative and cinematic; it paints pictures in my mind.
Honourable Mentions (because there really are way too many to list!);
Kings of Leon – Because of the Times
Radiohead – In Rainbows
Alt-J – An Awesome Wave
Reef – Glow
C) If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life…
A large bowl is Spaghetti Bolognese is my desert island/comfort food of choice
F) Outside of teaching yoga:
I’m a personal trainer and actor. I’ve also got an allotment, love dancing, boxing, going on very long walks, films, theatre & music, cooking and listening to podcasts whilst I do the washing up — and qualifying as a solo sky-diver and flying a plane are on my bucket list!!! …is that too much?!
