About WLQP:
The West London Queer Project exists to create safe, joyful spaces for LGBTQIA+ people across West London and beyond.
About Yin Yoga: Yin Yoga is a slow, mediative style of yoga practised mainly on the floor. Postures are held for several minutes at a time so practitioners can access deep tissues, such as the connective tissue and the fascia. Many of the postures focus on areas involving joints i.e hips, sacrum and spine.
By holding the postures for an extended period of time the benefits for the practitioners include:
- Calming and balancing for the mind and body
- Regulates energy in the body
- Increases mobility in the body, especially the joints
- Lowers stress levels
- Increases stamina
- Lubricates and protects the joints
- Improves flexibility in joints & connective tissue
- Releases fascia throughout the body
- Generates deeper relaxation
- Provides greater coping for anxiety and stress
- Compliments your Bikram hot yoga practise
FAQ
Is this a safe and inclusive space for LGBTQIA+ people? Absolutely. This class has been created in partnership with WLQP specifically to ensure everyone in the community feels welcome, seen and comfortable. You are invited to show up exactly as you are.
Will the class be exclusively for LGBTQIA+ people? No — the class is open to everyone and will be mixed with regular BYC practitioners. This is intentional. Yoga is a practice that brings people together regardless of gender, age, sexuality or background. You may find that sharing the mat with a diverse group is part of what makes it special.
Do I need any yoga experience? None at all. Yin Yoga is one of the most accessible styles of yoga there is. Whether this is your very first class or you’ve been practising for years, you are welcome.
Is it suitable if I have an injury or limited mobility? Yes. Yin Yoga is gentle and low impact. That said, please let the teacher know before class if you have any injuries, medical conditions or specific needs, so the class can be adapted where needed.
Will it be a hot yoga class? No. Although BYC is known for its heated studios, this Yin Yoga class will not be a hot class. The room may be slightly warmer than a standard studio, but it will be a comfortable, relaxed temperature.
